Precision Cuts (PC) are Tam Cooper, Jem Haynes and Joe Gray.
They formed in 1999 and immediately made an impression on the
breaks scene with a string of releases on octagon records and
a rash of dj gigs in London where they played sets made up of
hi octane breakbeat and a huge pile of their own dubplates of
their own new and innovative tracks.
Precision cuts are one of a handful of truly original Breakbeat
artists. They have a sound of their own which is instantly recognisable
without resorting to a “formula” Emotion and harmony
(literal and musical) are important parts of the PC sound, rolling
beats and subbass are others. Rennie pilgrem calls the PC drum
sound “the wall of drums” and you can see why. Precision
Cuts are actually trying to answer the question “where does
dance music go from here?”
Their unique sound has attracted attention from djs including
The Plump Djs, James Zabiela, Groove Armada, Hybrid, Ali B, The
Stanton Warriors, Layo and Bushwacka!, Freq Nasty, PMT, Meat Katie,
Tayo, Will Saul, Adam Freeland and Rennie Pilgrem.
PC have released records through a multitude of labels including
Octagon, Simple, Streetwise, Marine parade, Mob, Pocket Rocket,
Exceptional and Stratosphere.
Precision Cuts have remixed artists including Future Sound of
London, Smithmonger, Vigi and Nectarios, DJ Krush, Klute and The
Groove Diggerz. PC tracks have been remixed by Rennie Pilgrem,
Atomic Hooligan, Vigi and Nectarios, Zero (Emit/Collect) and Berlin’s
DJ Phonique.
PC have three ways in which they perform on stage: Regular dj
set, Dex and Fx and last but not least the full live show.
PC play regular dj gigs and have rocked dancefloors at HUM, Fabric,
The End, Boomslang, Lovebox weekender, Glastonbury, AIR, Concorde
2 and Chew the Fat. They hold monthly residencies at “Chew
the Fat” at The End and also “Off the wall”
at Ministry of sound. PC also hold a monthly residency at “Throb”
at The Telegraph, Brixton and also at “Outbreak” at
The Dogstar, Brixton
The Dex and Fx show has been tearing up dancefloors recently
and even set the main room at “The End” on fire in
December (well the fire alarm went off anyway) The dex and FX
show is Jem on the decks and Tam on an extra CDJ1000 and a pioneer
fx unit. PC have played dex and FX shows at Boomslang in Cambridge,
Hum and also at the 333 in London.
The PC live show is a force to be reckoned with and has gained
a reputation as one of the best live acts in breakbeat. The show
involves all 3 members of PC using CDJ1000s, Samplers and live
electronic percussion through beat synced FX. They have taken
this show all over the UK and around festivals in Europe. The
live show is carefully rehearsed and it shows. The crowd always
go mad.
Precision cuts just love playing in Holland in particular as
they have a love of all things Dutch! PC have been booked to play
in Holland alongside techno artists like Ken Ishii, Steve Rachmad,
Surgeon, Eric de man and Vince Watson. PC also play at various
underground events in Holland. In January they will return once
more to Eindhoven to play “De Rechter” a converted
court house (?) packed with sweaty Dutch ravers.
PC now operate their own label “Smartbreaks”. The
first release entitled “Smartbreaks In The Place”
will be released in late January through Z audio distribution.
