"The Surge" + "Sirens"(Smartbreaks) Released
March 2006 (SB003) |
|
The next chapter in
the ongoing odyssey of Precision Cuts and Smartbreaks sees our heroes
on a journey into daisy age funk beats via a kaleidoscopic spiral
of sitar driven space breaks. "The surge" features an
array of wierd sounds and live instruments. Most notably a backwards
grand piano chord (inspired by the queen flash gordon tune) from
which the tune gets its name. For "sirens" Tam stepped
up to the mike and pulled out a sitar, made a twang, then timestretched
it beyond all reason. So all in all another pair of run-off-the-mill
preset laden breaks tunes.

The Groove Diggerz
"Good Times" Precision Cuts Remix Even
Flow Recordings Released April 2006 |
|
Precision Cuts remixes
are popping up everywhere and as always they bang hard. This one
is no exception. PC take the bass line from the original and add
beats of their own combined with slivers of the original percussion
and a pitchshited set of chords , also from the original. The result
is a deep yet also exciting subbass driven track that peaks in a
breakdown that gets the pill munchers coming over all tearful like.
The added vocals in the breakdown are in fact the dulcet yet angelic
tones of one T Cooper. A voice like an angel who smokes JPS superkings.

"Listen" Precision Cuts Remix 192K
recordings released February 2006 |
|
For this remix PC took
a slightly different, harder and more electronic approach to the
sound. Programmed and mixed in Christian J's studio it was inevitable
that this track would be hard and driving. It was Released on top
new label 192K
from Cambridge. This record has seen a lot of play from DJs who
might not normally play PC trax. In contrast to the normal organic
PC sound this is almost entirely synthetic save for the trademark
PC tam'bourine style. Inspired by Eat Static and Renegade Soundwave
this remix is a belter.

"Smartbreaks
in the place / Now Lets Get It ON" Smartbreaks. (SB002)
released January 2006 |
|
| A
triumphant return for PC's label SMARTBREAKS. Both these tunes are
killers. "Smartbreaks in the place" is a calling card,
just to let everyone know that we're back. It has vocals from Sarah
Pope and also MC Ricky Humper. It was recorded in Christian J's
studio and is possibly the buffest tune we have released yet. The
B - Side "Now Lets Get It ON" is a more stripped down
and bass driven club track.

“Takin
Over" with Zero + Mr B Remix Streetwise Records (STW022)
. released December 2005 |
|
"Takin Over" is a deep and serious
tune. It was meticulously crafted in the old PC studio and represents
a lot of care and attention to detail. This is not an obvious
merry-go-round type of tune. Only the serious need apply. On the
B- Side Zero and Mr B apply the remix pressure and come up with
a killer floor filler. The fact that the remix was mixed down
by Tam in the new studio only adds to its weight and density.
This tune is getting DJ play across the board and is another step
along the road to Streetwise nirvana.

Vigi + Precision
Cuts "I Found love" Streetwise Records - STW021
released October 2005 |
|
"I Found Love" is a collaboration between
Tam and Vigi from Streetwise records. This tune is up for it psychoactive
breakbeat funk that will have em "screaming in Preston"
as Vigi likes to say! The vocals by Linda Taylor lift the tune
out of instrumental noodle and into full on anthem territory.
The average breakbeat DJ won't appreciate this but the dancefloor
will. The Vigi and Nectarios remix on the flip has a definite
flavour of "man with the red face" and is none the worse
for it either.

"Wicked
Music" by Smithmonger - Precision Cuts Remix. Pocket
Rocket Records - Released July 2005 |
|
Yet again PC turn in a rip roaring remix. This remix has been
played. A lot. The original track is a harder grittier affair
so Tam decided to add vocals, himself. The lush angelic choir
riding over the gritty electro bass is in fact one Mr T cooper.
It is the first track completed in the new studio and has a bit
of extra welly as a result! Pocket Rocket is operated by Silverback
records in Holburn London. Click

"Polly
800" with DJ Phonique Remix Simple Records (SIMPLE0512)
Released May 2005 |
|
Polly 800 was originally intended to be a question to all the
purists out there. The question being "is it house, is it
breaks? does it really matter anyway?" It was inspired mostly
by nights at Whoop Whoop and also a deep obsession with bloopy
molecular acid sounds. We imagined Polly 800 as some kind of uber
euro tekno chick who was about as technologically hip as is possible.
This is her tune. Click

"Guru"
by Vigi and Nectarios (Precision Cuts and Dave de Rose Remix)
Streetwise Records (STW016R) released December 2004 |
|
The original tune by Vigi and nectarios was always a PC favourite
in Vigi's DJ sets so we were very pleased to be enlisted on remix
duties. In order to maintain the fatness we also bought in Dave
de Rose, drummer extrordinaire. Dave has toured with Moloko and
is currently drumming for Beth Orton. His real passion is (like
PC's) for the funk and you can hear him beating out rhythms that
you will never get from a machine on real acoustic drums. (imagine
that, something real in a breaks record)

"Another
World" with Vigi and Nectarios remix Streetwise Records.
(STW015) released November 2004. |
|
Precision Cuts have been lurking around at the Streetwise parties
for a while now. These are not your average parties. Vigi, Marcus,
Big John, Jeff, goggsy and all the crew know how to do these things
properly and include all the right ingredients. Precision Cuts
have played a CDJ set at several of these shindigs and "Another
World" rocked the house (or beach) with its psychedelic energy.
Vigi and Nectarios have taken that psychedelic energy and stuck
a rocket up its arse in the shape of the remix. This has recieved
repeat plays from all manner of djs including Matthew Bushwacka!

"Breakbeat
Girl" Tayo meets Precision Cuts Downtown Functional
Breaks (FB031) released October 2004 |
|
This was another collaboration between PC and "the dread
at the controls" Tayo. Its got that disinctive Tayo dubstep
flavour but with the PC funk and swing in the rhythm track not
to mention a touch of 'ardcore. This tune is dedicated to breakbeat
girls everywhere, wherever they may be found. This was also included
on the "Beats and Bobs Vol 3" mixed by Tayo and released
through Functional Breaks.

"Royal Flush
/ Big time Roller" Simple Records (SIMPLE 0408) Released
April 2004 |
|
Royal Flush is an ambitious tune. It combines multi layered live
and programmed percussion with sounds recorded on a dictaphone
in a church in southern Italy. There are also honking acid notes
and staccato guitars. Just to top it off there are sounds recorded
at an early music concert on dictaphone again. "Big Time
Roller" is no less over the top. The drum track is like a
funky forest chorus, frogs and all. Over the top floats a sound
like a psychedelic ice cream van which is in fact Tam playing
the bouzouki. Blimey

No Love "Disconnection"
Precision Cuts + Will Saul remix Marine Parade 022. - released
December 2003 |
|
This remix rocks. Hard. The remix is a collaboration with Will
Saul and reflects the current PC sound. This tune thumps like
no other and is a perfect example of the "3rd generation"
Smartbreaks style. The remix has been caned by Djs including Groove
Armada, Hybrid, John Digweed and Way out West.

"Psychedelic
Squeezebox" + "The Herta" Smartbreaks (SB001)
released February 2003 |
|
This is the first release on Smartbreaks, PCs' own label. "Psychedelic
Squeezebox" was recorded in the "Big Room" studio
and features some fairly far-out production techniques. These
include recording a synced minimoog through a 50s Binson echo
box through a Marshall stack guitar amplifier. The main breakdown
sound is a stereo miked accordian played by all 3 PC members at
once. Surely a first?. "The Herta" was recorded entirely
using "Reason" software and is named after a sausage!

"Crazy
Dreams" + "Busted" Stratosphere 04. . - released
May 2002 |
|
This record was never properly released. Around 500 white label
promos made it into the shops but the full release never materialised
due to the fact that Stratosphere went out of business. However
the tunes were very well recieved with "Crazy Dreams"
recieving the heaviest clubplay. Crazy Dreams is full on 4 style
breaks with huge chords and snare rolls. "Busted" steps
up the tempo to 145 for what is one of PC's heaviest and maddest
tunes to date. The tune was intended as breaks for Trance and
Hard House loons.

"Let this
world be" + "Always True" Stratosphere 03.
Precision Cuts + Rickee Whoop Whoop - March 2002 |
|
This was the fruits of more collaboration
with Rickee Whoop Whoop. This
time recorded in the "Big Room" The vocals, recorded by
Rickee himself made this tune into "a classic without even
trying" in the words of Freq Nasty. The B side "Always
True" caught the attention of tech house Djs like Terry Francis
with its deep dubby house vibes. Always true was actually recorded
in Tam's bedroom studio prior to this and provides a neat illustration
of the difference between the two rooms

Precision
Cuts "Caveman" + Brainiac "Neuro" Stratosphere
01. - released November 2001 |
|
This was a double A side
single with two of Stratospheres' artists. Precision Cuts were on
one side with "Caveman" and labelmate Brainiac's tune
"Neuro" on the other. Neuro was a collaboration between
Joe Gray and Dan Brain and increased the tempo to a feverish 145
bpm. The tune was originally intended for release on Octagon. This
tune's cyber sound caught the attention of Sony who used it in the
soundtrack for Wipeout 2 on the Playstation 2. "Caveman"
was recorded by Tam in Bushwackas studio and is one of PC's darker
tunes.

DJ Krush featuring
Ryu."Rhythm Asobi" Precision Cuts Remix Exceptional
. released September 2001 |
|
Precision Cuts were enlisted by Exceptional
Records to remix this tune as a result of their growing profile
in the breaks arena. Their remix was a minimal, abstract dub effort
which had a kick drum that was also the bassline. The remix drew
the attention of Djs including Coldcut and Koma and Bones who included
it on their Y4K album. Dj krush's original featured percussion samples
which made perfect fodder for the Precision Cuts by now trademark
sample editing techniques.

"Hype it up" + "Sneaker" Octagon Records
(OCT12) . - released July 2000 |
|
This was the biggest selling Octagon
single and featured the vocals of MC Thrillah Man. The tune was
caned in clubs everywhere and is almost always dropped in a PC live
set. The combination of MCing and tripped-out acid Breakbeat proved
to be a winner. "Sneaker" is also a killer tune and was
played by the Plump Djs, Tayo, Bushwacka and the Stanton Warriors.

"Thrillah"
+ "Dancefloor" Octagon records (OCT11) - released
May 2000 |
|
This record was their most consistent
yet. "Thrillah" was a stripped out funky affair in the
style of the best break from Michael Jackson's classic of the same
name. The record does not however contain any samples of the original
and featured Tam on guitar. "Thrillah" is a homage to
the great Quincy Jones. PC like Quincy. A lot. "Dancefloor"
featured drums from the SPD 20, a new addition to the PC studio
and an integral part of the live show.

(Smartbreaks mix) + (Tokyo Nites mix) Octagon Records (OCT08).
- released January 2000 |
|
This was PCs' first ever release and
also marks the creation of the name "Smartbreaks". This
tune was recorded using the 03D, EMU and AKAI. At this point the
PC sound is born. The Tokyo Nites mix was a harder version intended
to appeal to Djs playing the harder sound where as the Smartbreaks
mix was a tranced-out glimpse of what was to come
